BUGGY MAN: His first thoughts after winning Headland’s Senior Eclectic – for which Ian McEldowney collected a $325 voucher from the Pro Shop – was to buy his wife a new golf buggy. Ian scored a total of 48 points on Monday and Tuesday in the Regis Aged Care-sponsored event to win for the first time since he joined Headland six years ago. “It was certainly worth the long wait,” said the 31 handicapper who collected $300 for the win and another $25 for taking out the Super Six event on Tuesday. The 76-year-old Uber driver who started playing golf in New Zealand almost six decades ago and was formerly a member of Horton Park, confessed he had never been a great golfer, but enjoyed the game, and the camaraderie. “It was obviously my turn to win something,” he said. Ian scored 40 points on day one and finished second in Division Two on a countback, and tabled 37 points on day two, again for second place. He scored 15 points on both says in the Super Six event, again for a win and a second. Kevin Howe (44 points) won the Division One Eclectic for men, and Glenn Weekes (also 44) won Division Two.
MONICA, AGAIN: The opening line to The Ode – ‘They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old’ – which is recited at ANZAC Day dawn services, could well have been written for Headland’s oldest current female golfer, Monica Knowles. A club member for 42 years, 78-year-old Monica returned the best individual score for women in the Regis Aged Care Senior Eclectic, played on Monday and Tuesday. And her 40 points on the second day of the event was her second score of the same total within a month, following a recent period where the wet weather had forced Monica to ‘really miss’ her favourite pastime. Despite a wipe at the par-five second, Monica’s front nine was exceptional – she scored 22 points with six three-point holes. With eight pars on her card, Monica returned the best women’s score over the two days by three points, won Division One on Tuesday and finished third (43 points) in the Eclectic. With 45 points, Anne Callanan won the Eclectic in Division One, and Sue Bolton (44) won Division Two.
PENNANT WIN: Headland’s A Grade Men’s Pennant team has captured another scalp in its quest for the 2022 Sunshine Coast Men’s Golf Zone Pennant title, beating Caloundra 5½ -1½ at Peregian Springs on Sunday. Teenager Ben Duncombe was again the star turn, winning 5&2 for his third successive victory. In fact, it was a case of the young and the not-so-young, with veteran Dave Rattray – a five-time Headland Club Champion – also winning his third match in 2022, 1-up. Adam Rydwanski (4&2), Wayne West (4&3) and Sean McGill (2&1) were also on the winning side of the ledger, while Steve Hudson squared his match and Adam Richards lost to Caloundra legend, Chris Wilson, 2-down. Next Sunday, at Noosa Golf Club, Headland meets the highly-fancied Maroochy River team, which was surprisingly beaten at the weekend by Mount Coolum. B Grade and Masters Pennant matches, scheduled for Mount Coolum on Sunday, were cancelled because of the condition of the course, and points were shared.
RIP RAY MOODY: With great sadness, Headland announces the passing of long-standing member Ray Moody, aged 88 years. Ray was a valued member of Headland Golf Club for more than 26 years, having joined the club in 1995. Ray will be missed by all those who had the pleasure of knowing him and the club extends its deepest sympathy and condolences to his family and friends. Ray’s funeral service will be held at Gregson and Weight Caloundra (5 Gregson Place, Caloundra) today (Monday, July 25, from 1pm.
NEXT WEEK: Because of a family bereavement, Headland Headlines will appear in an abbreviated form next week. Apologies in advance to those competition winners who will not receive their deserved mention.
