TWO-BALL JUG: Adam Richards and Shane Muller warmed up for next Sunday’s first round of the 2025 Men’s A Grade Sunshine Coast/Glasshouse Pennant competition with a brilliant round to win Saturday’s annual Two-Ball Jug. Played as a two-person Ambrose, Adam (handicap plus one) and Shane (one) played off scratch and shot nine-under 63 to win by a stroke from Jamie Duffy and Chris Eccles, in a big field of 240 players. The victors’ spotless card revealed seven birdies, plus an eagle at the par-five 13th. “We played well, and teamed well,” said Pro Shop assistant Shane, who conceded there was a smidgin of luck in the brilliant score. After hitting a seven wood five metres through the back of the green at the 13th following a monstrous Adam drive, Shane chipped in for the eagle. “And Adam putted in for birdie from off the front of the fifth green after we both came up short with our tee shots, and I did the same for birdie at the seventh,” he revealed. Other birdies were at holes two, six, 10, 11 and 14. Jug sponsors, Graeme and Jack Nicholas, of Hometree, and Grant Martyn Constructions – who have sponsored the event for the seven years of its existence – rewarded the winners generously, with a $100 Mitre-10 voucher, $140 on their respective House Accounts and their names on the Claret Jug for the second time. In 2023, when course was being redeveloped and par was 68, Adam and Shane shot 10-under, with 10 birdies and an eagle, but two bogeys.
DRY SPELL: Headland may have been swamped by rain for much of this year, but for Buderim GP David Hawes his 2½-year golf ‘drought’ did not break until Wednesday. “It is been that long since my last win, and any reasonably good round,” he revealed after winning the Medley Single Stableford, in B grade, with 40 points. For ages now I have been scoring in the mid-to-late 20s, and have been playing poorly.” David, who says he is now a ‘retiring’ GP who works just one day a week, had eight pars and seven bogeys in his round, and said it was refreshing to remind himself that he can actually play some good golf. “My recent form on the course has been such that I essentially thought my days of playing reasonable golf were over,” lamented the three-decade member. A regular participant of the Young Doctors group which plays in the final few timeslots each Wednesday, David says he may now contemplate an additional playing day. “A few of us are now retiring, so maybe another day might be an option,” he said. Joel Cooney, also with 40 points, won A Grade and new member, Ryan Sawell (39), won C Grade.
CANADIAN WIN: Jenny Stokes has continued her rich vein of form on the golf course with her third victory in 10 days. Jenny teamed with Joy Murray to win Thursday’s Canadian Foursomes for Women, penning 101 from their adjusted handicap of 22.5, for nett 78.5. They beat Josie Ryan and Jenny Ingham (79.375) to, ironically, win the spoils of a competition of which both were joint sponsors. “Jenny is in great form,” quipped Joy who conceded she had ‘helped occasionally’. “I enjoy my golf, but would like to be playing better,” said Joy, who graduated through Headland’s SWING program in 2019. Jenny, a former Australian Hockey player who also graduated from SWING in 2019, won Single Stableford events on June 17 and June 19 while in her current purple patch. And even though Joy revealed she had not been playing well, she collected the NTP at the eighth hole on Thursday.
HALFWAY GOAL: When Richard Reiterer was given a handicap of 30 on joining Headland in October, he considered it an honest mark for how he had been playing. But he also believed that despite being a ‘lifetime hacker and social golfer’, with some regular competition golf, he could possibly play to a mid-teen handicap. And on Tuesday he started his journey of improvement in spectacular fashion, scoring 42 points to win the Men’s Single Stableford, and in doing so sliced eight shots from his handicap. Without a wipe on his card, Richard penned a four pointer, six threes, nine twos and two single points, to score his maiden win at the first club he has been a member. Originally from Townsville, Richard moved south a dozen years ago and thought ‘it was now time’ to take his golf – which he played on an average of once a year in the past – more seriously. Kate Wilkie, with 37 points, won Tuesday’s Women’s event.
JOSIE SUCCESS: Conceding she ‘at last played some reasonable golf’, Headland icon Josie Ryan has finished third in the Sunshine Coast and Burnett District Women’s Championship at Kingaroy on Sunday. Josie, who has courageously fought Multiple Myeloma for the past three years, has been struggling with her golf to such an extent that she fired her first-ever plus 100 score at Headland in the recent Women’s Club Championships. Accompanied by four other Headland members – Annabel Harris, Narelle Hollowood, Kirsten Kaergaard and Cathy Roberts – Josie shot 83 on the par 73 course to finish behind Caloundra’s Tracey Brennan (77) and Di Benghamy of Bribie Island, on 82. Indicative of the struggles Josie has been having on the golf course, the Kingaroy score is the best from her past 54 rounds of golf.
MEN’S PENNANT: Against Noosa at Mt Coolum on Sunday, Headland’s B Grade and Masters teams scored a win and a loss in round two of the 2025 Men’s Sunshine Coast/Glasshouse Pennant competition. Masters won 4-2, with Peter Perrett and Chris Pace scoring impressive 5&4 victories, as did Peter Dunn and Wayne Cassidy in the Fourball. Rob Van Delft (1-up) gave Headland its fourth point after winning his final two holes, while Wayne Taylor (2&1) and the other Fourball pairing of Andy Whitmore and Col Pledge, (1-down) was beaten. B Grade lost 3½ -2½, with Brendan Duncan (5&3) and Damien Moelands (5&4) winning their matches, and the Fourball pairing of Brad Williams and Ryan Tomlinson snatching a draw after Ryan canned a six-metre putt on the final hole. Steve Bell was beaten 5&3, Tony Mesic lost 4&3 and the second Fourball pairing of James Daniel and Todd Petrie was beaten 2&1.
